Europe Grill, Newtown

There are certain places in Sydney that quietly anchor your memories, and Europe Grill is one of mine.

A view from the balcony of The Newtown Hotel

Tucked away in Newtown, it’s one of my favourite restaurants in the city, serving hearty Balkan cuisine that feels both grounding and celebratory. I’ve been here for my birthday twice now, each time with my family, and somehow it never loses its charm.

November birthdays and Newtown just make sense together. The air is warm without being oppressive, the streets are alive, and King Street always feels like it’s putting on a show just for you. Our tradition is simple: we arrive early, wander into one of the many pubs nearby, and settle in with a beer or two. From our table or the front window, we watch the passing parade – locals, students, artists, couples, families – all flowing past in their own little worlds. There’s something comforting about that ritual, about pausing life for a moment and observing it together.

Eventually, hunger pulls us toward Europe Grill. Inside, the food is generous and unapologetic – smoky meats, rich flavours, dishes designed to be shared. It’s the kind of meal that invites conversation, laughter, and a sense of togetherness that feels increasingly rare. Birthdays don’t need spectacle; sometimes they just need good food and the right people around the table.

One thing I’ve always tried to do is make each birthday a little different. A new cuisine, a new restaurant, a fresh experience – while still keeping the constants that matter, like family and familiar streets. Europe Grill represents one of those moments where novelty and tradition meet perfectly.

Every time I leave Newtown on my birthday night, full and content, I’m reminded why this suburb holds such a special place in my heart. It’s not just about the restaurant or the beer or the food – it’s about shared evenings that quietly become memories you carry with you.
